Most garage door openers are compatible with standard medium base light bulbs, but there are specific size and wattage limits you should follow for safety and performance. The vast majority of residential garage door openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Genie, and Overhead Door use an E26 medium base socket, which is the same as a regular household lamp. The most common compatible bulb shape is A19, which is the standard pear-shaped bulb about 2.4 inches wide and 4.3 inches tall. Many openers can also accept a slightly larger A21 bulb if there is enough clearance under the lens cover. Wattage is important. Most opener light sockets are rated for a maximum of 60 watts incandescent per socket, or 100 watts total if it has two sockets, to prevent overheating the plastic lens and wiring. If you use LED bulbs, wattage is less of a heat issue, but you should still use an LED equivalent to 60 watts, typically 8 to 10 watts actual power and about 800 lumens, to avoid radio interference. Some compact Genie and Chamberlain models use a smaller E17 intermediate base or a wedge base, but those are less common. Always check the label inside the light lens cover on your opener, as it states maximum wattage and bulb type, and avoid oversized corn cob LEDs that may not fit.
