A garage door opener light should typically stay on for about 3 to 5 minutes after the door is operated, which is the industry standard for safety and convenience. Most modern openers from Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Craftsman, and Genie are factory set to keep the light on for 4 to 4.5 minutes after the opener is activated by a remote, wall button, or motion sensor in the wall control. This provides enough light for you to get out of your car, unload groceries, and enter your house without being left in the dark. After that time, the logic board timer automatically turns the light off to save energy and extend bulb life. Some openers have adjustable timers. For example, on many LiftMaster MyQ wall controls you can adjust the light timeout from 1.5 minutes up to 10 minutes through the menu. If you press the light button on the wall console, you override the automatic timer and the light will stay on continuously until you press the button again. The opener light should not stay on for hours unless you manually turned it on or there is a fault with the motion sensor or logic board. The bulb type does not change the timer duration.
