To replace a garage door opener light bulb safely, you need to follow a few steps to protect yourself and the opener's electronics. First, for safety, unplug the garage door opener from the ceiling outlet or turn off the circuit breaker for the garage. Even though the light socket is low risk, it is best to work with no power, especially if you have to remove a lens cover. Next, remove the light lens cover. On most LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, the cover is held by a clip or screw. Squeeze the sides or remove the screw and gently pull the lens down. Let the old bulb cool if it was recently on, as incandescent bulbs get very hot. Unscrew the old bulb counterclockwise. Check the socket for corrosion or damage. Screw in the new bulb clockwise, but do not overtighten. Use a bulb that is recommended for garage door openers, ideally a rough service incandescent, appliance bulb, or an LED bulb labeled garage door opener compatible to avoid radio interference. Ensure the bulb wattage does not exceed the rating printed near the socket, usually 60 to 100 watts incandescent equivalent. Replace the lens cover, plug the opener back in, and test the light by pressing the wall button or operating the door. The light should come on for its timed cycle.
