To reset the garage door opener light, you are really resetting the opener's logic board and light timer circuit, which controls when the light turns on and off. Start with the simplest reset. Press the light button on your wall control panel to turn the light off and then on again. This toggles the manual override mode that can keep the light on continuously. If the light is stuck on and will not respond to the button, you need to power cycle the opener. Unplug the garage door opener motor unit from the ceiling electrical outlet. If your unit has a battery backup, you must also disconnect the battery by unplugging its harness inside the light cover, because otherwise the board still has power. Wait for at least 60 seconds to allow capacitors on the logic board to fully discharge and clear any fault codes. Plug the battery back in first, then plug the AC power back in. The opener will reboot and the light should flash briefly and then go off. Test the light by operating the door and timing how long it stays on. If your wall control has a menu, you can also reset the light timer setting to the default 4.5 minutes. If the light still stays on constantly or never comes on, the light socket relay on the logic board may be stuck and the board may need replacement.
