A garage door opener does not need a proprietary special light bulb in terms of fitting, because most use a standard medium E26 base that will accept regular household bulbs, but it does need a special type of bulb in terms of durability and electromagnetic compatibility to work reliably. For many years manufacturers recommended rough service incandescent bulbs with reinforced filaments that can withstand the constant vibration and shaking that occurs every time the door operates. Regular soft filament incandescent bulbs burn out much faster in this environment. With the transition to LED and CFL bulbs, a new problem emerged. Many inexpensive LED bulbs contain driver circuits that emit radio frequency interference in the 300 to 400 megahertz band, which is the same frequency used by garage door remotes. This interference can reduce your remote range from 100 feet to just a few feet when the light is on. Because of this, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie now recommend and sell LED bulbs specifically labeled garage door opener compatible, which are shielded to prevent interference, are vibration resistant, and are rated for cold garages. While any bulb will physically screw in and light up, using a garage door rated LED ensures you do not sacrifice remote performance.
