Painting an Oriented Strand Board panel does not make it completely waterproof, but applying a high-quality exterior primer and heavy-duty exterior paint creates a protective moisture-resistant barrier that significantly slows down water absorption. OSB is highly susceptible to absorbing moisture along its raw, porous edges and cut surfaces, which causes the wood strands to swell and delaminate permanently. To effectively protect OSB from water damage, all edges and surfaces must be thoroughly sealed with waterproof primers, elastomeric paints, or specialized flashing membranes before exposure to the elements.
