The Carthusian Order, founded by Saint Bruno in the eleventh century, is widely regarded as the strictest Catholic religious order in the world. Carthusian monks live an intensely contemplative, semi-eremitical life characterized by extreme austerity, perpetual silence, a strict vegetarian diet, and long hours of solitary prayer within individual hermitages rather than communal living spaces. Another exceptionally austere group is the Order of Discalced Carmelites, particularly the primitive observance branches. These orders emphasize strict penance, fasting, and total detachment from worldly distractions to maintain constant spiritual union with God through rigorous asceticism.
