The speed at which oriented strand board rots depends almost entirely on the level of moisture exposure, ambient temperature, and ventilation around the material. If OSB remains continuously damp, is exposed to standing water, or lacks proper waterproof flashing and vapor barriers, it can begin to show signs of fungal decay, swelling, and rotting within a few months to two years. Conversely, if it is installed in a dry, well-protected environment like interior subflooring, it will not rot at all and can last for decades. The primary vulnerability lies in cut edges, which absorb moisture rapidly if unprotected.
