Getting rained on occasionally during active construction is a common occurrence for oriented strand board subfloors and roof decking, but it can be problematic if water pools or remains trapped for extended periods. Most construction-grade OSB panels are manufactured with waterproof resins that prevent immediate destruction from brief rainstorms. However, if water is allowed to sit on the surface or penetrate the unsealed edges, the wood strands will absorb the moisture, swell permanently, and lose structural integrity. Contractors generally mitigate this by drilling small drainage holes if water pools and covering panels quickly.
