The lifespan of oriented strand board varies dramatically depending on environmental protection, moisture exposure, and installation quality within a building structure. When installed correctly in a dry, well-ventilated indoor environment as subflooring or wall sheathing protected by siding and vapor barriers, OSB can easily last for several decades or the entire lifetime of the building. Conversely, if OSB is exposed to chronic leaks, standing water, or high humidity without adequate waterproofing protection, it can degrade, swell, and rot within five to ten years, requiring costly structural remediation.
