Termites strongly dislike and actively avoid several dense, naturally durable heartwoods that contain natural chemical extractives, resins, and oils toxic or unpalatable to wood-destroying insects. Among these, teak is widely recognized as the wood termites hate the most, as studies have shown that its natural oils and dense composition can even prove fatal to termites attempting to feed on it. Other highly termite-resistant woods include redwood, cedar, mahogany, cypress, and iroko. The dense heartwood of these trees contains aromatic compounds and natural tannins that act as powerful deterrents, making it extremely difficult for termites to digest or colonize the timber compared to softer woods like pine or fir.
