Oriented Strand Board suffers from several notable disadvantages compared to traditional plywood, primarily related to moisture sensitivity and aesthetic appearance. When exposed to standing water or high humidity, unsealed OSB edges tend to absorb moisture rapidly, swell significantly, and fail to return to their original dimensions once dried, which can ruin flooring or roofing installations. Additionally, OSB is heavy, lacks any natural decorative wood grain making it completely unsuitable for visible finish carpentry, and generally offers lower fastener holding strength at the panel edges compared to solid plywood.
