Is security film worth it depends on your security needs, but generally yes, security window film is worth it for many homes and businesses as affordable layer of protection. Security film is clear or tinted polyester film applied to interior of glass that holds shattered glass together when broken, preventing easy entry. Benefits include deterring burglars who expect glass to shatter quickly, buying time for alarm response, reducing injury from flying glass during storms or accidents, blocking 99 percent UV rays that fade furniture, and reducing glare. Cost is $7 to $15 per square foot installed, much cheaper than replacing windows with laminated security glass which costs $25 to $50 per square foot. High quality 8 mil or thicker film with strong adhesive provides best protection, and when combined with alarm and locks, significantly improves security. Downsides include not making glass unbreakable, determined intruder can still get through with repeated hits, may void some window warranties, and professional installation is recommended for large windows to avoid bubbles. For ground floor windows, sliding doors, and storefronts, security film is worth it as part of layered security approach, but should not be sole defense.
