What are the three types of CCTV can be categorized in several ways, but most common classification by technology is analog CCTV, IP CCTV, and wireless or WiFi CCTV. Analog CCTV is traditional system using analog cameras connected via coaxial cable to DVR that records to hard drive, low cost, simple, but lower resolution and limited features. IP CCTV or network CCTV uses Internet Protocol digital cameras that connect via Ethernet cable or WiFi to NVR or network switch, offers higher resolution up to 4K, smarter features like AI analytics, power over Ethernet, and remote access via internet. Wireless CCTV is technically subset of IP but often considered third type, using WiFi to connect cameras to recorder without cables except power, includes battery powered cameras like Ring and Arlo that record to cloud, easy to install but dependent on WiFi strength and battery. Another classification by function includes dome cameras for discreet indoor coverage, bullet cameras for long range outdoor, and PTZ cameras that pan tilt zoom for active monitoring. By usage, types include indoor, outdoor, and covert hidden cameras. Most modern installations mix types, using analog where cost matters, IP where quality matters, and wireless where wiring is difficult, all serving same purpose of surveillance and recording.
