How to know if someone is watching CCTV in real time is difficult because most systems do not indicate live viewing, but there are clues. For analog systems, if camera has no internet connection and is only connected to local DVR, someone must be physically at DVR location to watch, so no remote viewing possible. For IP cameras and NVRs connected to internet, remote viewing is possible via app, so if you have access to camera app you can sometimes see active users or log showing who logged in and when, check system logs for remote login history. Some cameras have small LED that blinks when being accessed, but most do not. Signs someone may be watching include camera moving if it is PTZ and you did not move it, IR lights turning on during day, unusual network activity or data upload from NVR, and hearing clicking from DVR hard drive when no one should be accessing. If you are employee and employer has CCTV, assume employer can watch anytime they choose, as they own system. There is no reliable way for person being recorded to know if someone is watching live at that moment, as viewing does not trigger alert on camera side. Best way to know is to ask administrator who has access and check access logs.
