Yes, CCTV is legal in the US for property owners to install on their own property for security purposes, but its use is subject to privacy laws and restrictions. You are generally allowed to install cameras on your home, business, and property to monitor entrances, yards, parking lots, and common areas where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. Video only recording is widely permitted. However, there are important limits, you cannot place cameras in areas where people have reasonable expectation of privacy such as bathrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, hotel rooms, or inside rental bedrooms, doing so can be considered voyeurism and illegal. You also cannot point cameras specifically to harass neighbor by looking directly into their private windows or private spaces with intent to invade privacy, though capturing portion of neighbor's yard while monitoring your own is usually allowed. Audio recording is more restricted under federal wiretapping law and state laws, many states require consent of at least one party or all parties to record conversations, so camera with microphone may need consent or notice. In workplace, video is generally allowed except private areas, but audio may require notice. Always check state laws.
