Can you refuse to be on camera at work depends on workplace policy, your employment status, and location, but generally in United States private employers have right to use video surveillance in non private work areas and you cannot refuse while remaining employed. Employers can legally install CCTV in workspaces, sales floors, warehouses, entrances, and parking lots for security, safety, and loss prevention, and requiring employees to work under camera is considered condition of employment. You can object, but employer may discipline or terminate you for refusing, as at will employment allows employer to set conditions. Exceptions exist, surveillance is prohibited in private areas like bathrooms, changing rooms, showers, and locker rooms, and you can refuse or report that. If union contract prohibits surveillance or requires bargaining, you may have rights through union. If cameras are used to harass or discriminate, you may have claim. Audio recording is more protected, in two party consent states you may have right to object to audio. If you have privacy concerns, you can ask employer about purpose, data retention, and who views footage, review handbook, and discuss with HR. If you believe surveillance is illegal, you can file complaint with labor board or privacy regulator. For most employees, refusing video surveillance is not practical without risking job.
