Can your employer listen to your conversations on camera depends on camera capability and laws in your state or country regarding audio recording and workplace privacy. Technically, if CCTV system has microphone and audio recording enabled, employer can listen and record conversations within microphone range. Many modern IP cameras have built-in mics capable of picking up voices within 15 to 20 feet. However, legally, audio recording in workplace is more restricted than video recording. In United States, federal wiretap law and many state laws require one party or all party consent for audio recording, and several states prohibit audio recording in workplace without notice or consent. Video surveillance without audio is generally allowed in non private areas like sales floors, warehouses, entrances, but bathrooms and changing rooms are prohibited. Audio recording may be prohibited even in allowed video areas unless employees are notified. Employers should post notices if audio is recorded and have policy in employee handbook. If you are concerned, check employee handbook, look for signs stating audio recording in progress, ask HR about audio capability, and review state law. If employer records audio secretly where prohibited, it may violate law.
