Many people are allergic to latex because natural rubber latex from rubber tree contains many proteins that are highly allergenic and immune system can become sensitized after repeated exposure, especially in healthcare workers, people with multiple surgeries, and those with spina bifida who have frequent contact with latex gloves and medical devices. In 1980s and 1990s, use of powdered latex gloves increased dramatically due to universal precautions for HIV, powder helped carry latex proteins into air and onto skin, increasing sensitization, so latex allergy became more common. Genetics also plays role, people with atopy or other allergies more likely to develop latex allergy. Cross reactivity with fruits like banana, avocado, kiwi increases risk. Modern manufacturing processes may leave more residual proteins if not washed well. Repeated exposure causes immune system to produce IgE antibodies against latex proteins, leading to reactions from mild skin irritation to anaphylaxis. So many people allergic because latex is common in many products, repeated exposure sensitizes immune system, and proteins are potent allergens, though prevalence has decreased somewhat since switch to powder free and nitrile gloves.
