The problem with latex depends on whether you mean natural rubber latex or LaTeX typesetting, but main problems are allergy and usability. For natural rubber latex, main problem is allergic reaction, as natural latex contains proteins that can cause skin irritation, itching, hives, runny nose, wheezing, and in severe cases anaphylaxis, which is life threatening, affecting 1 to 6 percent of population and more among healthcare workers and people with multiple surgeries. This makes latex gloves, balloons, condoms, and mattresses risky for sensitive individuals. Latex also degrades over time with UV and oils, has initial rubbery smell, and is more expensive than synthetic alternatives. For synthetic latex in paint, problem is it is less durable than oil based in high wear areas. For LaTeX typesetting software, problem is steep learning curve, cryptic error messages, difficulty collaborating with Word users, and tricky image placement, making it hard for beginners. So biggest problem with natural latex is allergy risk, which can be serious and requires avoidance and use of alternatives like nitrile or vinyl. For mattresses, problems include cost, weight, and smell.
