Latex in a mattress is natural or synthetic rubber foam used as comfort and support layer, made from sap of rubber tree for natural latex or petroleum based for synthetic latex. Latex mattress is made by whipping latex sap into foam, pouring into mold with pinholes for breathability, and vulcanizing with heat to create elastic, bouncy, durable foam. There are two types, Dunlop latex which is denser, firmer, more durable, made by whipping and baking, and Talalay latex which is lighter, softer, more airy, made with vacuum and freezing steps. Latex in mattress provides pressure relief, contouring similar to memory foam but more bouncy and responsive, not sinking, good for back support, naturally breathable with pinhole structure that keeps cool, hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites and mold, and durable lasting 10 to 15 years, longer than memory foam. Natural latex mattress is made from 100 percent natural rubber tree sap, organic latex has certifications like GOLS, blended latex mixes natural and synthetic for lower cost, synthetic latex is all petroleum based. So latex in mattress is rubber foam layer offering bouncy, supportive, breathable, durable sleep surface.
