Whether latex is safe on skin depends on whether you have latex allergy and what type of latex. For most people without latex allergy, natural rubber latex is safe on skin for short term contact, such as in gloves, clothing elastic, or mattresses, though prolonged contact with sweating and friction can cause irritant contact dermatitis, which is skin irritation, redness, and itching from moisture and friction, not true allergy. For people with latex allergy, latex is not safe on skin, as contact can trigger allergic contact dermatitis, hives, itching, redness, swelling, and in severe cases anaphylaxis. Synthetic latex in paints is generally safe on skin once dry, but wet paint may irritate. For LaTeX typesetting software, it is not applied to skin. For latex condoms and gloves, they are safe for most but not for latex allergic. If you have sensitive skin or latex allergy, you should use latex free alternatives like nitrile gloves, latex free bandages, and cotton clothing. So for non-allergic people, latex is safe on skin with minimal irritation, but for latex allergic individuals, it is not safe and should be avoided, using alternatives like nitrile, vinyl, or silicone.
