Fruits linked to latex allergy include those that share similar proteins with natural rubber latex, causing cross reactivity known as latex fruit syndrome. Most common fruits linked are banana, avocado, kiwi, and chestnut, which have highest cross reactivity, so people with latex allergy often also react to these fruits with itching, swelling, or hives. Other fruits and foods linked include papaya, mango, pineapple, peach, plum, cherry, apricot, nectarine, passion fruit, fig, grape, strawberry, and tomato, as well as vegetables like potato and bell pepper. This happens because proteins in natural rubber latex are similar to proteins in these fruits, so immune system confuses them. For example, someone allergic to latex may get itchy mouth after eating banana or avocado. Not everyone with latex allergy reacts to all these fruits, but risk is higher. So if you have latex allergy, doctors often advise caution with banana, avocado, kiwi, and chestnut especially, and to watch for oral allergy symptoms after eating these fruits. This cross reaction is known as latex food syndrome and affects 30 to 50 percent of people with latex allergy.
