America originally belonged to Indigenous peoples who had lived on the continents of North and South America for thousands of years before any European contact. In what is now the United States alone, there were hundreds of distinct tribes and nations such as the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Apache, Iroquois, Choctaw, Pueblo peoples, and many others, each with their own languages, governments, territories, and cultures. Archaeological evidence shows human habitation in the Americas going back at least 15,000 to 20,000 years, with people migrating from Asia via Beringia. These Indigenous nations owned, managed, and cultivated the land. After 1492, European powers including Spain, Portugal, England, France, and the Netherlands began claiming large parts of the Americas through exploration, colonization, and conquest, often without recognition of Indigenous ownership. The concept of land ownership itself was different for many Indigenous groups, who saw themselves as stewards of the land rather than owners in the European legal sense. So from an Indigenous perspective, the land was never empty or unowned, it was their homeland. From a European colonial legal perspective, ownership was transferred through treaties, purchases, and often forced removal. Today, the US government recognizes tribal sovereignty over certain lands.
