What America was called before depends on which time period and whose perspective you mean. Before European contact, the continents now called the Americas had thousands of distinct names used by Indigenous peoples for their own lands, there was no single name for the whole landmass. For example, many Indigenous peoples in the area now the US called the land Turtle Island, while the Aztecs called their region Anahuac, and the Inca called their empire Tawantinsuyu. When Europeans first arrived, they initially called it the New World, the Indies, or the West Indies because Columbus thought he had reached Asia. The name America itself comes from the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and the mapmaker Martin Waldseemüller first used the name America in 1507 on his world map. The area that became the United States was called various colonial names like Virginia, New England, New Spain, New France, and British North America. After independence in 1776, the new country was called the United States of America, which is still its official name. So before America, the land had Indigenous names, then European colonial names, and only later the name America was applied to the continents and the country.
