In AA, which most commonly means Alcoholics Anonymous, KISS is a very well-known slogan that stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid or the gentler version Keep It Simple, Sweetheart. It is one of the core pieces of advice given to newcomers and long-time members alike. The idea behind KISS is that recovery from alcoholism does not need to be made overly complicated with complex theories, excuses, or overthinking, and that the program works best when you focus on simple daily actions like not drinking today, going to meetings, calling your sponsor, and being honest. The phrase is often seen on AA chips, banners, posters, and literature. Outside of Alcoholics Anonymous, KISS has the same general meaning in business and engineering as a design principle that says simple solutions are usually better than complicated ones. In some AA meetings, people also use KISS humorously to remind themselves not to overcomplicate their personal problems or relationships. It is not an official step or tradition but an informal slogan that has been used since the early days of AA in the 1940s and is still one of the most quoted acronyms in twelve-step programs.
