The best lubricant for garage roller doors is a silicone-based lubricant or a white lithium grease that is specifically labeled for garage doors, because these products lubricate without attracting excessive dust and dirt. Avoid standard WD-40, which is a solvent and degreaser, not a long-term lubricant, and it will quickly dry out and make things worse. It can be used to clean but not to lubricate. For the rollers, hinges, and bearing plates, a spray can of garage door lubricant with a straw applicator is ideal. Silicone spray is excellent because it stays slick, resists water, does not gum up in cold weather, and leaves a thin dry film that does not collect as much grime. White lithium grease is thicker and longer-lasting, making it very good for metal rollers, hinges, and the torsion spring coils where you need more cling. Some professionals prefer a dry Teflon or PTFE spray for rollers because it leaves an even cleaner film. For the opener chain or screw drive, use a dedicated chain lube or the same white lithium grease. For the springs, spray lightly along the top of the coils. Apply sparingly, wipe off excess, and reapply every six months for quiet operation.
