A squeaking noise from your garage door can come from several metal-on-metal contact points that have become dry, dirty, or worn over time. The most common cause is dry rollers. If you have metal rollers without sealed bearings, the bearings inside the roller need lubrication, and when they dry out they squeak with every rotation inside the track. Even nylon rollers can squeak if the stem or bearings are dry. Second, the hinges that connect each door panel can squeak. Each hinge has a pivot point that flexes as the door goes around the curve, and without a drop of oil it will squeak loudly. Third, the torsion springs or extension springs above the door can squeak or groan as they twist and stretch under tension. They need a light coat of garage door lube or silicone spray. Fourth, the track itself may be dirty, bent, or have loose bolts causing the rollers to rub. Also check the opener chain or screw drive. A dry chain will squeak and rattle. To diagnose, have someone operate the door while you listen closely with the door disconnected from the opener. Never lubricate the tracks heavily, but lubricate rollers, hinges, and springs with a silicone or lithium-based garage door lubricant, not WD-40.
