Garage door lube is far better for a garage door than standard WD-40, and using the correct product will make your door quieter and last longer while using the wrong one can cause premature wear. Garage door lube is a category of lubricants that includes silicone-based sprays, white lithium grease sprays, and dry PTFE Teflon sprays that are specifically engineered for overhead doors. These products are designed to cling to metal, penetrate roller bearings, hinges, and springs, resist water, not freeze in winter, and leave a long-lasting protective film that does not turn into a paste of dirt and grime. Standard WD-40 is not a lubricant in the traditional sense. It is a solvent-based cleaner that dissolves rust and grease, displaces moisture, and provides only very short-term lubrication before evaporating. If you spray standard WD-40 on your rollers and hinges, it will clean them and temporarily stop squeaking, but within days the parts will be drier than before and will squeak even louder. It also attracts dust when it does leave residue. For cleaning dirty tracks you can use WD-40 to wipe grime away, but for actual lubrication you should always use a product labeled garage door lubricant, silicone lubricant, or white lithium grease.
