Garage door rollers usually last between 10 to 20 years, but their lifespan depends heavily on the material they are made from, how often the door is used, and how well they are maintained. The cheapest builders-grade rollers are metal rollers with unsealed bearings, often with only seven ball bearings. These typically last 5 to 10 years or about 10,000 cycles, and they become noisy quickly because dirt gets into the bearings and they have no seal. Better quality metal rollers with 10 or 11 sealed ball bearings can last 10 to 15 years. The longest-lasting and quietest option is nylon rollers with sealed precision ball bearings. High-quality nylon rollers can last 15 to 20 years or 20,000 cycles or more, because the nylon tire is softer on the track, does not rust, and the sealed bearings keep out dust and retain grease. Usage matters a lot. A door used twice a day will last much longer than a door used eight times a day for a large family. Environmental factors like coastal salt air, extreme cold, or dusty desert conditions shorten roller life. Lack of lubrication also dramatically shortens life. You should inspect rollers annually for wobbling, cracked tires, chipped metal, or excessive play, and replace them all at once if any show wear.
