Yes, you are absolutely supposed to lubricate garage door rollers, and it is one of the most important parts of regular garage door maintenance to keep the door quiet and extend its life. The rollers are what allow the heavy door to glide up and down the tracks, and their internal bearings spin thousands of times a year under heavy load. Without lubrication, the metal bearings will wear, squeak, grind, and eventually seize, causing the door to jerk, strain the opener, and wear out the track. How you lubricate depends on the roller type. If you have metal rollers with exposed ball bearings, spray a silicone-based garage door lubricant or white lithium grease directly into the bearing area while manually rotating the roller. If you have nylon rollers with sealed bearings, you do not need to saturate the bearing itself but you should still lubricate the roller stem and the area where the roller meets the hinge. Do not drench the roller in grease or spray the track heavily. A short burst of spray on each roller is enough. Wipe off excess so it does not drip onto the floor. Lubricate every six months, or more often in dusty or humid climates.
