A noisy roller garage door can be caused by several interacting factors that create grinding, squeaking, rattling, or banging sounds. The most common cause is worn or dry rollers. Metal rollers with unsealed bearings become very noisy as dirt gets into the bearings and the metal wheel grinds against the metal track. Even nylon rollers can become noisy if the stem or bearing is dry or if the nylon tire is chipped. Second, loose hardware is a huge noise amplifier. The tracks are held by brackets and bolts that loosen over time from vibration, and when loose they rattle loudly as the door moves. Third, dry hinges between door panels squeak as they flex around the curved part of the track. Fourth, the tracks themselves may be dirty, dented, bent, or misaligned, causing rollers to bind and scrape instead of rolling smoothly. Fifth, the torsion or extension springs can groan and creak as they wind and unwind if they are dry or rusty. Sixth, the garage door opener type matters. Chain drive openers are inherently louder than belt drives, and a loose chain will slap and rattle. Finally, an unbalanced door or a door that is off its tracks will make loud banging or popping noises and should be inspected immediately for safety.
