Silicone spray is significantly better for garage door rollers than regular WD-40, and this is an important distinction for long-term maintenance. Regular WD-40 in the blue and yellow can is primarily a solvent, degreaser, and water displacer, not a long-lasting lubricant. It will quiet a squeaky roller for a day or two because it cleans and adds a very thin oil, but it quickly evaporates, leaves the metal dry, and can even strip away existing grease, making the squeak worse in the long run. Silicone spray, especially a product labeled as garage door lubricant, is a true lubricant designed for this application. It contains silicone that stays slick, does not evaporate quickly, resists moisture, performs well in both hot and cold temperatures, and leaves a thin dry film that does not attract as much dust and dirt as oily products. For rollers, silicone penetrates the bearings, reduces friction, and quiets noise for months. If you only have WD-40 available, use the WD-40 Specialist line that is specifically Garage Door Lube or Silicone Lubricant, not the original formula, as those specialist versions are formulated correctly for rollers.
