To properly lubricate a noisy garage door, you need to use the right product and target the right points while avoiding areas that should stay dry. First, gather supplies. You need a silicone-based garage door lubricant or white lithium grease spray with a straw nozzle, a ladder, a rag, and safety glasses. Do not use standard WD-40. Start with the door closed and the opener disconnected for safety if you are working near springs. Clean the tracks with a damp cloth to remove dirt and old grease, then wipe them almost dry. Do not flood the tracks with grease. Next, lubricate the rollers. Spray a short burst into the bearing in the center of each roller and where the stem enters the hinge, spinning the roller by hand. Then spray each hinge at its pivot point where it bends. Move up to the top and spray the bearing plates on either side of the torsion tube where the shaft spins, and lightly spray across the top of the torsion spring coils to let lube seep between coils. If you have extension springs, lube the pulleys. For the opener, lube the chain or screw drive lightly. After lubricating, reconnect the opener and run the door up and down several times to distribute the lubricant, then wipe off any excess drips to keep your floor clean.
