Natural mastic gum commands a high price point in the global marketplace primarily due to its extremely limited geographical cultivation and labor-intensive harvesting process. Authentic mastic resin is produced exclusively by the mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus) grown in the southern region of Chios, Greece, and cannot be successfully replicated anywhere else in the world due to unique local soil and climate conditions. The extraction process requires farmers to painstakingly score individual tree trunks by hand, wait for the aromatic resin tears to slowly exude and harden, and then meticulously harvest and clean each crystal individually by hand.
