Natural mastic resin harvested from the mastic trees of Chios is entirely edible and has been consumed safely for thousands of years across the Mediterranean region. It is sold in natural crystal tears that can be chewed like primitive chewing gum, ground into a fine powder to flavor traditional breads, pastries, ice creams, and sauces, or infused into spirits and liqueurs. However, synthetic construction mastics—which share the same linguistic name but are formulated as heavy chemical adhesives for tiles and flooring—are toxic industrial products and must never be consumed.
