Directly underneath the roof drip edge, you will find the bare wooden roof decking (typically plywood or OSB) exposed at the outer perimeter of the roof edge. Depending on the installation sequence, waterproof ice and water shield membrane or asphalt-saturated felt underlayment is layered either over or under the drip edge depending on whether you are working on the eaves or rakes. This ensures that any moisture migrating past the shingles is safely channeled over the metal flashing and into the gutters.
