The correct placement of the drip edge relative to the waterproof underlayment depends on where you are working on the roof. Along the horizontal eaves at the bottom of the roof, the drip edge is installed directly on the roof deck, and the underlayment goes over its nailing flange so water flows into the gutters. Along the sloped gable rakes on the sides, the underlayment is installed on the deck first, and the drip edge goes over it to prevent wind-driven rain from entering the side edges.
