Installing a drip edge on an existing roof without removing the bottom course of shingles is exceptionally difficult and generally not recommended by professional roofers. Because standard building codes and manufacturer specifications require the drip edge to be nailed directly to the roof deck beneath the underlayment and starter shingles, retrofitting it onto an existing finished roof requires carefully prying up old shingles and nails, which often cracks fragile asphalt materials and compromises the roof seal.
