If you see one mouse in your home, it is very likely you have more than one, and pest control experts often say that seeing one mouse can mean there are five to ten more hidden nearby. Mice are social animals that live in family groups and breed extremely quickly, with a single female able to have five to ten litters per year of five to six babies each, and those babies mature in about six weeks. They are also nocturnal and very good at staying hidden in walls, attics, basements, and under appliances, so the one you saw during the day may be a sign that the nesting area is overcrowded or that food is scarce. Common signs of a larger infestation include droppings that look like small dark pellets, gnaw marks on food packaging or wood, scratching noises at night in walls, a musty ammonia-like smell from urine, and nesting material like shredded paper or fabric. Even if you only ever see one, it is wise to assume there are more and to take action by setting multiple traps, sealing holes, and cleaning thoroughly rather than assuming it was a single stray mouse that wandered in.
