The 5 day mouse rule is an informal guideline used by pest control professionals and experienced homeowners to determine whether a mouse infestation has been eliminated after trapping. The rule says that after you have caught the last mouse and you have sealed entry points and cleaned thoroughly, you should continue to monitor for signs of mice for at least five consecutive days with no new droppings, no new gnaw marks, no sounds in walls, and no traps triggered. If after five full days you see zero fresh signs, it is likely that the infestation is gone or at least under control for that area. Some professionals extend this to a seven day or even two week rule for larger infestations, because mice breed quickly and can hide well. The five day period accounts for the fact that mice are cautious and may avoid traps for a day or two, and droppings can be old. To use the rule, keep traps baited but unset as monitors, sprinkle a thin layer of flour to check for footprints, and inspect daily for fresh droppings which are dark and soft versus old droppings which are dry and gray. If you see new signs within five days, you still have mice and need to continue trapping and exclusion. It is not a scientific law but a practical waiting period.
