Mice can be good pets for the right person, especially for older children, teenagers, and adults who want a small, inexpensive, intelligent, and entertaining companion that does not require a lot of space. Pet fancy mice are domesticated house mice bred for temperament and come in many colors, and they are generally friendly, curious, and can even learn to recognize their owner and come when called. They are social animals, so females often do well in small groups of two or three, while males are more territorial and often need to live alone. Advantages include low cost, small cage footprint, quiet nature, and being fun to watch as they climb, dig, and explore. Disadvantages include their very short lifespan of only one and a half to three years, strong musky odor especially from males, nocturnal activity that can be noisy at night, need for weekly cage cleaning, and their fragility which makes them not ideal for very young children who might squeeze them. They also need proper care including a secure cage with a solid floor, bedding, chew toys, balanced diet, and veterinary care if sick. If you can commit to gentle handling daily and regular cleaning, mice can be rewarding pets.
