Many foods that are safe for humans are poisonous or harmful to pet mice and should never be fed to them, while for wild mice poison refers to rodenticides used for pest control. For pet mice, foods that are toxic include chocolate which contains theobromine, caffeine, raw beans, raw rhubarb, raw potatoes and green potatoes containing solanine, onions, garlic, and citrus fruits for male mice which can cause kidney damage due to d-limonene. Walnuts in large amounts, alcohol, and highly salty or sugary processed foods are also harmful. Sticky foods like peanut butter in large globs can be a choking hazard for pet mice even though wild mice love it as bait. For pest control, commercial mouse poisons contain anticoagulants like bromadiolone or cholecalciferol which cause internal bleeding or calcium overdose over several days and are highly toxic to mice, pets, and wildlife if ingested, so they must be used in tamper-resistant bait stations by professionals and kept away from children and pets. Natural substances like plaster of Paris mixed with flour are sometimes claimed to kill mice but are unreliable and inhumane. If you have pet mice, stick to a balanced commercial mouse pellet diet with occasional safe treats like cooked egg, plain oats, and small pieces of apple or carrot.
