Mice do not warn other mice about traps in the way humans would use language to say danger, but they do communicate danger indirectly through smell, behavior, and learning. Mice have a very strong sense of smell and can detect the scent of a dead mouse, blood, or stress pheromones left on a trap, which can make other mice cautious and avoid that area for a while. They are also naturally neophobic, meaning they are afraid of new objects in their environment, so a newly placed trap may be avoided for a day or two until they get used to it. Mice can learn by observing that a particular location or object is associated with a negative outcome, and surviving mice may become trap-shy after seeing another mouse caught. Research shows that mice communicate through ultrasonic vocalizations and scent marking that can signal stress, but there is no evidence that they have a specific warning call that means trap. This is why pest control experts recommend washing traps to remove human scent and dead mouse scent, changing bait, moving trap locations, and using many traps at once, because a single trap that has caught a mouse may become less effective if other mice learn to avoid it.
