A mouse's favorite foods are high in fat, sugar, and calories, because in the wild mice seek energy-dense foods to survive. Despite the cartoon stereotype of cheese, mice actually prefer foods like peanut butter, chocolate, nuts, seeds, and grains. Peanut butter is considered one of the best baits for traps because it has a strong smell that attracts mice from a distance and a sticky texture that makes it hard to steal without triggering the trap. Other favorites include hazelnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and cereal grains like oats and wheat. Mice also love sweet foods like chocolate, cookies, and sweetened cereals, and they will eat fruits like apples and bananas. They are omnivores and will also eat small amounts of meat, bacon, and even insects if available. In a house, they are often attracted to pet food, bird seed, and food crumbs left on counters. Mice do not need a lot of food each day, only about three to four grams, but they will cache or hoard food in hidden places. Understanding their preferences helps with both trapping and prevention, storing these attractive foods in airtight glass or metal containers makes your home much less appealing to mice searching for a meal.
