What is a frozen coil in HVAC is condition where evaporator coil in indoor air handler becomes covered with ice, blocking airflow and heat exchange, causing AC to stop cooling properly. Evaporator coil is indoor coil where refrigerant evaporates absorbing heat from house air, normally stays above freezing around 40F and has condensation that drains away. Frozen coil means moisture that normally drains has turned to ice, forming thick layer of frost or ice on coil fins, tubing, and sometimes suction line outside. Signs of frozen coil include reduced airflow from vents, warm air blowing, visible ice on indoor unit or copper lines, water leaks when ice melts, and AC running constantly without cooling. Causes include dirty air filter restricting airflow, dirty evaporator coil, closed vents, blower failure, low refrigerant due to leak causing low pressure and temperature, faulty TXV. Frozen coil reduces efficiency, can damage compressor due to liquid floodback, and increases energy use. Fix involves turning off AC, running fan only to thaw several hours, replacing filter, cleaning coil, checking blower, and calling technician if freezing recurs to check refrigerant charge and components.
