Air conditioning evaporator coils freeze when their surface temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) while moisture from the warm indoor air continuously condenses onto them. When airflow across the coil is severely restricted or refrigerant levels are abnormally low, the refrigerant absorbs heat too slowly, causing the surrounding metal tubing and fins to plunge below freezing and turn the condensation into solid ice.
