An air conditioning system is not necessarily permanently broken when its coils freeze, but a frozen coil is a clear warning sign of an underlying operational problem that demands immediate attention. In many cases, a frozen coil is simply the symptom of a routine maintenance oversight, such as a severely dirty air filter or blocked return grilles, which can be easily resolved by turning the system off, letting the ice melt, and clearing the restriction. However, if the freezing is caused by more severe issues like a major refrigerant leak, a failed blower motor, or a collapsed duct system, professional repair work will be required before the air conditioner can function safely and reliably again. Running an air conditioner while it is frozen can cause catastrophic damage to the compressor due to liquid slugging, where unevaporated liquid refrigerant floods back into the outdoor unit and shatters internal components. Therefore, while a frozen coil does not automatically mean your entire system is broken beyond repair, continuing to run it in that compromised state can quickly transform a minor, inexpensive fix into a complete system replacement.
