Can a bad compressor cause freezing in air conditioning system? Generally, a bad compressor itself does not directly cause coil freezing, but related issues with compressor operation can contribute to freezing conditions. AC coil freezing is usually caused by low airflow, dirty filter, dirty evaporator coil, low refrigerant charge, or faulty metering device leading to low pressure and temperature below freezing in evaporator. A weak compressor that cannot pump properly may cause low suction pressure and low evaporator temperature, which could lead to freezing, or compressor that short cycles may cause issues. However more common is that low refrigerant due to leak causes freezing, and compressor runs longer trying to cool. If compressor is failing to compress, suction pressure drops, refrigerant does not absorb enough heat, coil temperature drops below 32F and moisture freezes. Also if compressor valves leak, pressures abnormal. So bad compressor can indirectly contribute to freezing by causing abnormal pressures, but primary causes are airflow restriction and low charge. If you have frozen coil, check filter, blower, and charge first before assuming compressor bad.
