What do normal AC coils look like describes two sets of coils in air conditioning system, evaporator coil indoors and condenser coil outdoors, both should look clean, with thin aluminum fins and copper tubing without ice, heavy dirt, or damage. Normal evaporator coil located above furnace or in air handler looks like A-shaped or flat coil with rows of shiny aluminum fins spaced closely and copper tubes, fins should be straight not bent, surface should be slightly damp from condensation but not covered in thick dust or mold, no ice buildup, no oil stains that indicate leak. Normal condenser coil outdoors wraps around outdoor unit, looks like coil with thin aluminum fins surrounding unit, fins should be clean, not clogged with leaves, dirt, or cottonwood, no bent fins blocking airflow, copper tubes intact. Both coils should have uniform fin pattern, no frost except evaporator may have light condensation, no corrosion. When clean, light should pass through fins somewhat. If coils are dirty they look gray, matted with dust or grease, if frozen they have white ice. Normal coils allow efficient heat transfer and airflow.
